Early Life of Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Boateng Mainoo was born on 19 April 2005 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, to Ghanaian parents. He grew up in the Stockport suburb of Cheadle Hulme and began his youth career at Cheadle & Gatley Junior Football Club before joining Manchester United at the age of nine.

Mainoo fell in love with football at his childhood club Cheadle & Gatley Junior Football Club. His displays began to gather attention from those who had seen him play. Scouts noticed his natural talent and love of the game at Cheadle & Gatley.

One of his earliest coaches, Steve Vare,  was among the first to recognize Kobbie’s special abilities. He saw Kobbie do extraordinary things with a football for a child his age. Also, Steve Vare gave glowing reviews about the player and his enormous and undeniable talents.

Senior Career

Mainoo joined the senior squad at Manchester United after signing his first professional contract with the club in May 2022. His performances, including a good performance from the middle of the park in a game against Carlisle United in the EFL Trophy, earned him an invitation to the first-team training squad in October 2022.

On the 16th of October, he was named on the bench for the first time for the 2022-23 Premier League match against Newcastle United. Mainoo’s senior debut came on the 10th of January 2023, starting in a 3-0 home win against Charlton Athletic in the 2022-23 EFL Cup.

He made his league debut on 19 February, coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 home win against Leicester City in the Premier League. Due to his impressive displays, Mainoo was named among the players for Manchester United’s 2023-24 pre-season tour of the United States.

Kobbie’s goal was the winner in the 7-goal thriller that came in the seventh minute of additional time. Such was the beauty of the goal that it won the Premier League Goal of the Month for February 2024.

International Career

Although Kobbie Mainoo represented England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 youth levels, he was still eligible to represent Ghana and England. Both countries tried to make him represent them at the senior level of men’s international football.

However, Kobbie opted to play for the Three Lions of England. In March 2024, Kobbie Mainoo was called up to the England senior team for the first time for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, although he was called up to the Under-21 squad.

He made his debut at the age of 18 on 23 March 2024 with 75 minutes played in the match against football powerhouse Brazil gaining rave reviews for his performance in his brief cameo.

Mainoo made his first-ever England start against Belgium again at Wembley three days later, where he was well received after the match, coming off after 75 minutes to replace James Maddison. He won the man of the match award for his performance in his full international debut for England.
